Tension in Gujarat village as police raid after alleged cow slaughter

Surat (Gujrat) : Tension gripped Dabhel village of Navsari district on Tuesday morning as the police went to the village to raid suspects involved in alleged cow slaughter. The villagers pelted stones on the police, which retaliated by opening fire and injuring two persons. As many as three policemen were also injured in the stone pelting, and were rushed to Yashfin hospital at Navsari.
Acting on a tip off, Navsari police, alongwith Gaurakshaks associated with the VHP, reached Navi Nagri street in Dabhel village on Tuesday morning.
The police reportedly caught a youth carrying mutton packed in a gunny bags, and was on his way to deliver it.
The villagers got angry over the police action and pelted stones on police jeep. They also rescued the youth from police captivity. The police, in retaliation, fired three rounds on the mob, hitting two.

The injured policemen were identified as Ramesh Vinayak, Bhavesh Patil and Pramod Patil. The doctors claimed that the condition of injured policemen was out of danger while two civillians suffered bullet injuries on their legs, but are in normal condition.
Navsari District Superintendent of police Nilesh Jajadiya rushed to the spot after learning about the incident, while Valsad police force also came in shortly after.
Talking to The Indian Express, Jajadiya said, “The situation is under control as police staff reached the spot with additional force. There is nothing to worry.”
He further said, “The tension started when police accompanied with gaurakshaks went to the village, after learning about cow slaughter. Three policemen and two civilians from mob are injured and their condition is out of danger. We have started the process of loding a complaint into the incident.”
