Clean Ganga : SC pulls up pollution boards for not taking stringent action against industries

New Delhi : Taking into consideration the present state of river Ganga, the Supreme Court on Wednesday criticised the Centre and state pollution control boards for their failure to take action against defaulters.

The Supreme Court pulled up the Centre as well as pollution control boards for failing to act against polluting industries functioning on the banks of the holy river.

The SC has further asked the National Green Tribunal (NGT) to monitor and take action against all such polluting industrial units.

Earlier, the government had also warned of stringent action against industries that are violating pollution norms on the banks of the river Ganga and its tributaries.

Meanwhile, Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar has listed 764 such polluting industries which have been given notice to install sensors at affluent discharge points by March 31 next year.

Cleaning up the river Ganga has been on top of the Narendra Modi government`s agenda.

Several other action plans for the cleaning up of Ganga like setting up of toilets in villages and towns, treating industrial effluent and municipal sewage, setting up of crematoriums etc have been lined up under the Clean Ganga mission.
