The situation was under control but the police were conducting a combing operation in the village and elsewhere in the district on Wednesday to prevent further untoward incidents, Jajadia told PTI. Two policemen were injured in stone-pelting in the village on Tuesday while three people were injured when police opened fire.
The violence started when the police arrived in the village to probe reports of illegal slaughter of cows. According to the police, some men belonging to a minority community attacked the police team.
Police lobbed tear-gas shells and later fired in the air to disperse the violent mob. Twelve men were subsequently arrested. Similar incidents of violence were witnessed in Vadodara and Ahmedabad cities in the last fortnight.
Meanwhile, the state authorities said the police have been asked to deal firmly with those indulging in violence. “Police have been asked to take a strict action against those indulging in violence,” additional chief secretary, home department, S K Nanda said in Gandhinagar.
“There wasn’t any communal angle. These clashes were between some members of a minority community and the police,” he told reporters.
“While reviewing the clashes of Shahpur (in Ahmedabad city) and Dabhel, I learnt that police force was not adequate during the raids. I suggested the respective police heads to be well-prepared and take extra force while carrying out such operations,” said Nanda. A high-level meeting was held on Tuesday to review the law and order situation in the state, Nanda added.
