Meerut – 22 yrs on, Salim Patla held for Meerut blasts

Meerut – A local court in Muzaffarnagar on Friday remanded to 14 days judicial custody 52-year-old Salim Patla who was allegedly involved in multiple bomb attacks on PAC pickets two decades ago. Patla was arrested on Thursday night, and was one of three men accused in the 1992-93 blasts in the city. He has been absconding since the blasts occurred.
Demanding anonymity, an official from the Anti-Terrorism Squad, said, “During interrogation, it came to light that after his escape, Patla began working in a garage in Kashmir. After a few years, he moved to Delhi, and was staying at Inderlok Colony. From there, he moved to Mustafabad and later to Loni. Finally, he purchased a house at Navin Nagar locality in Moradabad. All this while, he was dealing in stolen luxury vehicles. He would first purchase such vehicles, get their fake documents ready, and then sell them in Kashmir and North East.”
When TOI asked IG Meerut zone, Alok Sharma, why it took so long to nab the culprit, he said, “It was difficult to trace him as he was living with a pseudo name and changed places quite often.”
The blasts had a connection with the 1987 Hashimpura massacre. On 22 May 1987, during the Hindu-Muslim riots in the city, 19 PAC personnel allegedly rounded up 42 Muslim youth from Hashimpura locality took them in truck to the outskirts, where they were shot and their bodies were dumped in water canals.
A few days later dead bodies were found floating in the canals. In May 2000, 16 of the 19 accused surrendered, and were later released on bail. Three others were already dead.
In 2002, the Supreme Court transferred the case to a sessions court at Tis Hazari from Ghaziabad. The case is still pending.
Meanwhile, Salim Patla and his accomplices tried taking revenge by hurling bombs at the PAC pickets.
On May 1992, Patla attacked a PAC picket at Nauchandi ground, in which a head constable, Tavasur Hussain, was injured.
A year later on January 26, the trio once again attacked a PAC camp outside a veterinary hospital on Hapur Road, leaving constable Mahindra Singh dead and two others injured.
While two of his accomplices were arrested, Patla, managed to escape. A special TADA court had initiated a case against the three, in which Abdul Jabbar and Mohammad Ayub, were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Currently, investigations are on to ascertain whether Patla was in contact with any terror outfit.
