KOLKATA: Eight years ago when 28-year old Nirmalya Mukherjee thought of starting an event managementcompany in the city he fell short of words while explaining the concept to his parents.

He could not convince them as to how he could help if a company wanted to hold a party or organise an event. But after all these years, things have changed. Now, the book of accounts at Evension (Mukherjee's event management company) convinces his parents that the concept is not just relevant but profit earning as well. More than 20 event management companies have come up over the years atSalt Lake and many out of these do not even move out of this eastern fringe of the city for business. Salt Lake has enough work to keep the pot boiling for them.
CHANGING TRENDS
"Gone are the days when people would run pillar to post with lists in the hands so that the buffet in a party had all the food in right quantities, to check if the decorations were all in place or to see if invitations had been sent to all the guests. It is the task of event management companies these days," said dg event

"Big companies and lavish weddings always hired help for organising events but these days I find clients who have small budgets also looking for event management companies. I have recently worked for a party with a budget of just Rs 8,000. Although my profit margin was low, but this is how you increase your work volume," added Gupta.
MOOLAH MATTERS
"The industry for event market has grown rapidly and so has the support system. My company has grown to more than double from where it started. I charge 15 percent of the event budget and it earns me a decent profit. Having started from zero investment I could not have expected more from Evension," said Mukherjee.
Mukherjee handles one to two events in a month and does not take up any project beyond that, though offers keep coming in. Gupta, on the other hand, is six years old in the industry and likes taking up as much work as possible.
Having started with an investment of just Rs 50,000, though oGupta's endeavour brke even in just a few months with her Rs 20,000-Rs 25,000 profit every month, she wishes to take up as many projects as possible and still not compromise with the quality of service. Popularity in the area according to Gupta is the sole way that can help her fulfil the dreams of becoming a wedding planner.
Even new players in the event management sector at Salt Lake are playing the right cards to increase business and maximise profits. Exploring newer opportunities and helping clients to brand and market their products better is the success formula for Exclusive Events and Entertainments. All of 25, young proprietor of Exclusive Events and Entertainments, Akash Saha, said, "The events I take up have a minimum budget of Rs 20,000-Rs 25,000 and the upper limit can go up to lakh. Every event earns me profits between 15 percent and 25 percent, depending on the size of the event."
WHY SALT LAKE
For entrepreneurs venturing into event management, zeroing in on Salt Lake to be the ideal location for their event management was driven by several factors. While for Gupta it had been increasing demand of ladies parties, for Saha it was the growing number of companies at Sector V and the corporate demand. Mukherjee though started his company for completely different reasons. "When I started the business here there were hardly any competitors and rent for premises were also very low. Moreover we could see all the corporates moving in to this part of the city. So we thought of having the first bite of the cherry," said Mukherjee.
